This is one of the local trading boats (kumpet) about to be boarded and searched by members of the ship’s company of HMS Salisbury to check for items such as oil, food, ammunition and Indonesian terrorists.
After boarding, on the roof of the kumpet can be seen a seaman guarding the crew of the kumpet with a sub-machine gun (Lanchester) while a senior rating or Officer looks on (bottom right).
Some of the Ghurkha troops on board HMS Salisbury having a meal before being dropped off to go ashore on patrol.
These are some Malayan troops on HMS Salisbury that we transported as well as the Ghurkhas.
One of the kumpets used by us to ferry troops ashore. This one is already loaded to go on patrol.
This is the aft end of a Malayan patrol boat tied up alongside. A full shot of this ship in image 7.

These are Malayan troops talking to the staff of the Chinese laundry on board HMS Salisbury.

Ghurkha troops about to disembark from HMS Salisbury.
Not sure of the name of this place on the river, obviously a small jetty with HMS Salisbury tied up alongside as can be seen bottom left. It shows locals and the ship’s Chinese laundry staff fishing off the ship.
This is the same place as in image 11 showing local kumpets and the stern of HMS Salisbury at the small jetty.

Myself posing on the forecastle of HMS Salisbury tied astern of another ship.
Myself and REM ‘Smudge’ Smith having a natter right aft on HMS Salisbury somewhere at sea. Smudge was one of the final intake of National Servicemen into the Navy, he served in Korea at the beginning of his service and he signed on for a few more years.
Once again, myself and Mechanic Apprentice ® ‘Buck’ Taylor at sea on HMS Salisbury doing a bit of ‘bronzy bronzy’ time. The box-like structures are covers for machinery like winches or life rafts and would float off if the ship sank.
